The Utrecht Medical Center (UMC) seeks to position itself as a state-of-the-art healthcare provider by creating a masterplan that both inspires a campus atmosphere and solves logistical challenges for those using the hospital. The introduction of a large “landscaped” elliptical common area on the north side ties all the main front entrances to the center– and especially the polyclinic facilities– for guests arriving by automobile. Internally, the existing courtyards of the nursing units will be converted into waiting areas for the polyclinic patients with seating areas under large, overhead skylights. The south side masterplan focuses on the creation of a campus boulevard with a pedestrian and bike traffic connection to the university and public transport. This boulevard connection to university facilities reinforces UMC’s extension as a premier teaching hospital in The Netherlands.
