Gran Sasso

project info

Inspired by the mountains of the Abruzzo region, the 36,000 m² Gran Sasso Shopping Centre is a modern, single-level, enclosed shopping centre in Teramo, Italy. The mall was developed by Foruminvest Italia Srl and designed by RTKL and Progetto CMR in cooperation with C Concept Design. The centre is located along the Superstrada Teramo Mare that connects Rome to the Adriatic Sea, in Piano d’Accio. The direct surrounding area contains the university of Teramo and a 9,000 seat football stadium that hosts the local club, Calcio Teramo. With 30,000 m² of GLA and 4,500 available surface and underground parking places, the Centre has significantly increased Teramo’s commercial value. The Gran Sasso has set a new standard for Italian retail developers, as it is the first in the area to provide such a high-quality shopping environment. As a testament to its success, the Centre won Best New Medium Development in the ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards in 2009. The reputable ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards recognize the best of commercial real estate, through criteria like architecture, financial structure, impact on the surrounding area, innovation , design concept, environmental awareness and more. Located across its namesake, the Gran Sasso mountain, the shopping centre was built to fit perfectly into the surrounding environment. The Gran Sasso was clearly born for more than commercial reasons. Providing a recreational and social space for visitors, the Gran Sasso is considered a great place to spend a family day. The mall is laid out as a compact circuit of three malls with several spectacular squares. The Shopping Centre embodies the Italian notion of the plaza as the place of gathering.
